The design of a basic mechanical pump seal is extremely important. In most cases, a mechanical seal features three sealing points that include two simple static seals and one primary seal which is essential for maximum efficiency. In most designs, the primary seal can be defined as a spring-loaded vertical bearing and includes one fixed, one rotating and two flat faces. The design allows for the seal faces to be pushed together using spring force and hydraulic force from the sealed fluid. The result is that the mechanical pump seal forms in order to prevent leaking between stationary areas of the pump and the rotating shaft.
