How to Prime Your Pump - Dade Pump & Supply DBA De Ruiter Electric Motor

What is priming the pump? This is one of the most common questions we receive in our store and repair shop. Priming the pump refers to removing all of the air out of the system and filling it with water. The majority of pumps in irrigation, water supply, boosting and other applications require the pump to be self-primed on the first use. Failure to do will cause premature seal damage that is not covered under the manufacturer's defect warranty. If the complete system is built correctly there will be a check valve or foot valve holding water in the line after the self-priming process. It is a great idea to regularly check the system - valves, fittings, piping - to ensure proper water flow and that no air is entering into the system. If the pump is not self-primed or the system is not installed properly you may run the pump low on water or without water at all. Please read the steps below to ensure your pump is self-primed sufficiently to avoid damaging your pump.

Step 1:  Open all valves on the suction and discharge lines and make sure any hoses on the discharge side are also open.

Step 2:  Remove the plug on the discharge cross or tee fitting (depending on plumbing of the system).

Step 3:  Fill pump and suction line with water - DO NOT RUN PUMP DRY. Running the pump low on water or with no water will damage seals and possibly melt the diffuser and impeller. Be sure to open the discharge valve after the pump is running.

Step 4:  Replace the plug on the discharge fitting and start the pump. Water should be visible in 10 minutes or less. The priming time will depend on the depth of the water table in the well and the horizontal run length. If there is no water within 10 minutes stop the pump and restart the priming process from Step 1.

PLEASE NOTE:  We recommend a licensed professional install and prime your pump. If you are performing the installation on your own please be careful. If pump is run continuously with no liquid the water may boil in the piping and in your pump. This can break pipes, fittings and pump ports and discharge dangerous scalding steam and water.
